The latest in this installation of Suzanne Sullivan McGillicuddy’s Retro Roadmap Recommendations. I’m as smitten with that sign as you thought I’d be! Thanks so much for your additions to the map Suzanne, and readers, if you have places you want to recommend, send ‘em along!
The Modern Snack Bar is located on the North Fork of Long Island just east of Riverhead. It’s a great stop if you are visiting the wineries, boating in the nearby Peconic Bay or pumpkin picking in the fall.
Despite the name, they have been offering much more than snacks since 1950. They’re are not open in the winter, but when the doors are open for business you can get full meals with local themes like Long Island Duck or any comfort food usually found at a diner.
When my mother lived in a small cottage nearby that was too small to host a dinner, my family had Thanksgiving dinner at the Modern Snack Bar (don’t plan on your own Thanksgiving there since they close for the actual holiday – we celebrated a bit early that year). They served all the usual fixin’s and it was delicious – best part of all – we didn’t have to do dishes!
The decor features homey wood paneling and the restaurant still has a counter with spinning stools and pies on display. The darker decor reminded me of diners in New England – which are very different than most of the “shiny style” diners that you find on Long Island. In fact, most of the North Fork feels very New Englandy in general. In between the wineries and beaches you will find many white churches, town greens and farm stands.
