Most of the posts on midmodmap/retroroadmap are vintage places to go, things to do, or look at in the real world–since first-hand is really is the best way to experience most of life, imho.
Vintage music presents a bit of departure from this real world approach because it can be fully enjoyed in the virtual world- you don’t need to try it on to see if it fits!
Luxuriamusic.com is an all volunteer internet-only radio station operating out of a tiny studio in Hollywood California. They specialize in an eclectic mix of “Surf Music, Bossa Nova, Exotica, Space-Age Bachelor Pad, Jazz, Soft-Psych, Sunshine Pop, Wall of Sound, Latin, Go-Go, and Film & TV music of the past 50 years”- right up our midmodmusic alley.
One of the absolute bestest things about the site is the ticker on the top of the page letting you know exactly what song is playing when you’re listening to it (like now I’m listening to Daydreams by the Johnny Mann Singers)!
But even better they also have a Playlist page to let you know what you just listened to, and where to buy it! This is a fabulous resource for building your own midmodmusic library!
Just an idea of what you might find when you tune in:
The Kitsch Niche- Pour contents of gargantuan Incredibly Strange Music collection into blender. Add bits of comedy, theme shows, and horrible impressions into blender. Garnish with cheese.
Thrifting for Tunes- Recorded behind the bar in the exotic Mauna Loa Lounge, Thrifting for Tunes features eclectic theme-based sets of music, with a heavy concentration of recordings from the exotica and Polynesian Pop repertoire… plus, cocktails.
The Bachelor Pad Radio Show- Lounge, cocktail, exotica, private-eye jazz and retro-swing.
If there isn’t a DJ no need to worry- the music plays on under the watchful eye of the Luxotron 5000.
Swing on by Luxuriamusic.com – put on the headphones, take a dip in the blogs to learn more than you could ever know about vintage music and mid mod pop culture, and for gosh sake, make a donation to this great listener supported site!

Milly was the original program director on Luxuria (along with Chuck Kelley) when they first went on the air back in ’00. He appears a bit more periodically now, as he’s composing music for films these days. Check out his scores for “Spine Tingler : The William Castle Story” (out in Oct 09 on DVD in the William Castle boxed set), the Jack Wrangler documentary (if you have to ask who he is, you may not need to know), and the new (09/09) “Sugar Boxx”, a women-in-prison flick with Russ Meyer fave Kitten Natividad and other beaudacious babes.
Thanks for the insider scoop Brother Cleve, you’re a wealth of wonderful retro knowledge!

Are you familiar with the old Cool & Strange Music Magazine that existed in the late ’90s/early 2000s? (I know Brother Cleve is…) It sounds like it would be right up your alley. I was one of the writers for Cool & Strange for its entire lifecycle, which means we’ve got a highly sought-after complete archive of Cool & Strange right here on Anderson Avenue.
