Retro Roadmap HQ 2010 Relocation – Hooray!

That is the official way of saying “I now have a place to sit and write that isn’t the kitchen table”!

Retro Roadmap HQ

In the few years we’ve lived in The Hacienda the front bedroom has changed from “space to be creative in /guest room” into “space where I get dressed for work early in the morning as not to wake Retro Roadhusband or the dog”. The guest  bed always ended up heaped with clothes, and most of my older photo stuff was crammed into the closet, obscured by “business casual” blouses and way too many vintage cardigans. My 2010 resolution was to change all that.

Because of all of the fun I am having writing/photoing/living Retro Roadmap, I decided to reclaim that space- work clothes be damned- and turn it into Retro Roadmap HQ!

With the help of my darling Retro Roadhusband, who is “assemble/move/hang/tech/very patient” guy, we’re transforming the space into someplace I can concentrate in, instead of always sitting at the kitchen table. Here’s a quick sneak peek:

Plotting potential Retro Roadmap adventures and improving my geography at the same time!

Random McNallyFor a gal that writes about travel and maps, my knowledge of geography is not very good. My grade school friends and I  half-joke that we spent 2 days in 5th grade learning the state capitals of the New England states, then the rest of the year was all Revolutionary war, stamp act and all. I think that is why I have such a thing about maps- by hook or by crook I will learn where everything is!

Global Goods Post FoliosI have had these prints that look like oversized fold out postcards since at least 1989 – I am pretty sure I got them at this cool lil shop that used to be around the corner from The Blue Diner. They’ve got images from 2 of my faves – John Baeder, diner painter and Ken Brown, illustrator and postcard collector. I thought they would fit in with the decor, and voila, they do!

John Baeder's Roadside America

Did I mention I love vintage maps of the USA? This “Skotch Kooler” showing the Esso guy seeing the USA in his Chevrolet makes me smile every time I look at it.

Happy Motoring Skotch Kooler

As I type this I can hear Rigby the Retro Roaddog chewing on his bone, sprawled out on the new carpet remnant we laid down today, so I think he approves of the change. The heat just came on through the register near my feet and since I like to be mosty toasty I have to say I’m excited about this change as well.

2010 is going to be a great year for Retro Roadmap, and I’m so glad you all are along for the drive!

Very Nice, RetroGal! I have to admit that MoonGlow PR is operated from my kitchen table. It faces my husband’s office – CigarCraig.com, which is also located at the kitchen table. Both of our offices back up to the home office that is located on the baker’s rack in the corner of the kitchen.
But… on a positive note: My office got a new refrigerator yesterday!
    🙂

Best of luck to you and your roadmap travels in 2010!

    A. As I said in my email, you created quite an inspiration station there. Looks great.

    B. Your use of by hook or by crook made me giggle. I have just started watching old episodes of “The Prisoner.”

    C. Now that the holidaze are over, i’m excited to catch up on Retro Roadtrip readin’ (and writin’!!)

AMC, Cliff just hepped me to the entire monologue from the original Prisoner that contains that phrase, so I’m in good company all ’round! Can’t wait to hear about YOUR Retro Roadtrips!

ZOMG! That’s wonderful! I love your desk and those motel print thingies are gorgeous! I should look around for something like that!

I can’t wait to read more of your Retro Roadblogs for 2010!

HaHa! I taught 5th grade for more years than I care to remember and I can tell you how easy it is to get hung up on that darned Rev. War! But I’m such a geography junkie than my poor kiddies got a very healthy dose of maps, not to mention history!

I love the re-do. Just the perfect retro-roadtrip inspiration place.

Thanks Lizzie! Actually I like to think that my lack of geo knowledge has made me into a map junkie- I gave nieces and nephews big old atlases and map books for Christmas this year, maybe they’ll be inspired.
Yes it is nice to have a place to myself to write in, but also cool to have my laptop I can put on my lap while snuggling with the pup here on the bed 🙂
