RetroRoadmap Hits The Road! It’s a Retro Road Trip to SXSW in Austin, TX

Hooray! I’m planning the first RetroRoadmap “Retro Road Trip / Rock Tour” to South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin TX coming this March. RetroRoadhusband will be playing some gigs along the way as well, so we’re both very excited about this adventure!

IMG_1897As you can see by taking a look at the list of RetroRoadMAPs on the RetroRoadMAPs page, there are many states that we don’t even have one entry for, and I’m hoping this trip will take care of some of that.

So far the states we’re hoping to add to the RetroRoadMAPs include:

Alabama
Arkansas
Kentucky
Mississippi
Tennessee
West Virginia

and the District of Columbia

Retro Road Trip to SXSW for RetroRoadmap.comAnd whileย  the states below already have a RetroRoadmap with at least one entry, I’m hoping to add some more cool old places to these RetroRoadMAPs:

Maryland
Virginia
North Carolina
Georgia
Ohio
Pennsylvania

and anyplace the road will take us!

Can’t wait to be a Retro Road Reporter! I’ll be photoing, posting, Facebooking, Tweeting, and (horrors!) even video-ing!

I’ve already got some places pinned to our map, but if you have any suggestions, please post them in the comments below.

And if you’re on our route and would like to meet, or host a gig for the RetroRoadhusband that would be swell too!

Happy Motoring!

Mod Betty

Wow, what a great trip! I’d suggest Mammy’s Cupboard in Natchez, Mississippi for its sheer beautifully tasteless audacity. I didn’t get to eat there but the food’s supposed to be authentically southern. The Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo is a must too if you’re in that area. And Roy Orbison’s hometown is Wink, Texas. I’ve never been there but it’s definitely on my list.

ooh Gunnar, is that the Mammy where you dine a’neath her skirt? I think I saw that on your site, and more recently on a re-viewing of a Rick Sebak special. Putting the pins in the map right now- thanks!

One more vote for Mammy’s Cupboard. When I worked summerstock in Natchez, we would drive out to to the place, share a table with a little old lady or two and always always order your pie with your lunch, so they don’t sell out while your enjoying your sandwich and blueberry lemonade. Mmmmmmmm.

Alisa- thanks for swinging by The RetroRoadmap and for the insider skinny on Mammy’s Cupboard (though from all the food pins I’m putting on our SXSW trip map I may not be so “insider skinny” when we return. But I does love me some pie!

If you are in the Memphis, TN area, you HAVE to go to The Commissary! AMAZING Southern BBQ and wonderful people! I think it’s actually in Germantown. Well worth any wait there might be….and good luck parking!

LRD- thanks for the tip – we’re definitely wanting to try some real good southern food and BBQ along the way. I’ll be bringing the stretch pants for sure!

This sounds like a ton of fun. Are you going to be in western NC?

We just stayed at The Shady Dell in Bisbee, AZ and it seems like it would be absolutely essential on the Retro Roadmap! We also hear that there’s a great midcentury modern furniture shop in Phoenix (real vintage stuff, not new).

Oh I’m totally envious of your stay at The Shady Dell! That has been on my dream list for years. Not sure our route will take us there on this trip, but we’ve definitely got a RetroRoadmap roadtrip on the radar for AZ. I’d love to hear any of your other tips for that area and beyond. Maine perhaps? ๐Ÿ™‚
