Slo Jack's is one of those kinda places that I love sharing on Retro Roadmap not only because it serves tasty food from a cool looking vintage building, but it's also one of those handy "Don't Fall Prey To The Chains At The Bottom Of The Exit Ramp Because A Retro Roadmap Worthy Place is Just Around The Corner"food stops for when you're on the road and getting hongry!
Seriously, this place is like less than 1/2 a mile off from exit 65 off Route 27 (The Sunshine Highway) in Hampton Bays, NY (Long Island) so it's wicked handy when you're starving and on the road. We were hepped to "Slo's" (as some of the locals call it) which has been open since 1960, by our fellow-musician pal Mark Bacino, and stopped here for a way tasty cheeseburger after our own rock and roll weekend on Long Island.
The burgers we ordered were much bigger and tastier than we expeced for a roadside joint, with a little bit of char for flavor (their menu notes that their burgers are 1/4 pound beefburgers.)
While we originally decided to mix it up and get onion rings instead of fries, once we spied the crinkle-cut fries on someone else's tray we quickly amended our order (Mod Betty is a sucker for a crinkle cut fry!) and were glad we did. Nice and crispy!
Surprisingly again for a roadside fast food type place, they're also known for their Mexican food, fried chicken, lobster rolls and ice cream! If you're so inclined, there's a simple but fun miniature golf course in the back (supposedly the oldest one on Long Island), so you can pretend to work off some of those calories you just consumed, or maybe work up an appetite for some dessert.
