The Hebert Candy Mansion Shrewsbury MA – Perfect for a Sundae Drive!

No RetroRoadkid adventure would be complete without a stop for sweet treat, and what better place for a good Retro Roadaunt to take the kiddles but a giant house filled with candy and ice cream! We headed to the Hebert Candy Mansion in Shrewsbury MA on a sunny Easter weekend and as soon as we walked in and saw this gigantic rabbit Retro Roadhusband said, "Show Me The Bunny!"

Hebert's has been making chocolate and sweets since 1917, and moved into the big Tudor house on Route 20 in Shrewsbury in 1946. Famous for inventing white chocolate, the business was family owned and operated until a few years ago, and had a number of locations around the state, which are now independently owned. The Candy Mansion is the most famous of the locations, with its likeness gracing the covers of their candy boxes and old postcards. I also remember fondly their chocolate Mansionettes - little solid milk, dark and white chocolates in the shape of the distinctive location.

The Candy Mansion is a great place to visit any time of year. You can admire the old architecture and woodwork while you pick up a box of chocolates, indulge in a make-it-yourself sundae from their ice cream bar, or as in the case the weekend we were there, buy your Easter candy!

I have been to the Mansion many times throughout the years but never at Easter and the place was packed with families buying candy and dressed up kids posing with the Easter bunny. I was thrilled to see that the normally corded off section they use for candy creation had been turned into an extended display area for every time of holiday chocolate and candy you can imagine, and chocolate bunnies of every size.

It was also a great opportunity to get a close up view of the ceramic glazed blocks that construct this area, which seem to be suited perfectly to a candy company since they are pink!

The pink theme runs through the old house, with sconces and hanging lamps in the ice cream section echoing this theme.

Who can resist a make-your-own sundae, on a sunny Saturday? There were plenty of toppings to choose from, and don't forget to return to the counter to have them douse your creation with whipped cream. Despite the fact that we had eaten recently we all managed to do some damage to our ice cream treats, and so quickly that I didn't even have time to snap a photo!

So if you're in the mood for a box of chocolates, or just an excuse for a Sundae drive any day of the week, head to the Hebert Candy Mansion. Your sweet tooth will thank you!
